I hope this discussion will continue. The status of grammatical
categories, both in general and in particular languages, seems
to be very difficult to discuss at all, probably because of its
literally fundamental importance. Now that computational tools and
abundant data are available to so many, there is an opportunity to
review these questions in the light of standard corpora. Clear's
posting makes a fine starting point. What I would like to see is
a systematic tour of the points it raises.
