Have you tried the LDOCE, Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English,
third edition. It offers excellent contrastive information on frequency
of items in speech and writing.
As well as the BNC, Longman used the Longman Corpus network. This last
is what they based their material on spoken English on. You might
contact them and see if they offer access to researchers.
She will probably hate me for it, but the Director of Dictionaries is
Della Summers and her email is 100441.2246@compuserve.com.
In any case, the LDOCE 3 is a remarkable achievement in lexicography,
well worth the modest investment it represents.

Best regards,
Doug McCarthy
(not on Longman's payroll !)
